IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
ENERGY STAR AND SUPER EFFICIENT APPLIANCE REBATE PROGRAMS
WILL TERMINATE AS OF 12:01 a.m. on
MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2012

The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) will close the state rebate programs for Energy Star and Super Efficient appliances, heating/cooling equipment, and other energy efficient systems at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, March 19, 2012.  Applicants with approved applications in the “paperwork received” status will no longer have access to the rebate log-in system to check on their rebate status.  Applicants on the rebate wait list will not be approved, and the wait list will be abolished since all rebate funds have been committed and no funds will remain for wait-listed applicants.  All rebates will be processed and paid out to applicants by the end of March.

We want to thank all applicants, vendors, contractors and our utility partners who participated in the program and helped make both of these appliance rebate programs such a success.  Over 62,000 Virginia residents accessed these appliance rebate systems since April 2010, and DMME paid out rebates ranging from $35 to $1,500 to almost 44,000 applicants in that two-year period.  A little over $10 million was distributed to rebate applicants for appliance rebates in the Commonwealth.  We are confident that the money spent by Virginia consumers on energy efficient appliances, systems and equipment will, over time, significantly decrease their energy consumption while saving both energy and money spent on utility bills into the future.  We have appreciated the opportunity to provide Virginia residents with this financial incentive to increase the energy efficiency of their homes.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program Closure on January 20, 2012
to New Applicants

The Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program will be closed to new applicants on Friday, January 20, 2012.  We will not accept any new application reservations for rebates after 5:00 p.m. on that date.  The following restrictions will apply to those applications:

  1. You will have 30 days to complete your selected project items from the date you are approved
  2. You must redeem the rebate in the system by your 30-day deadline to avoid rebate cancellation
  3. You must mail your claim information to DMME’s Division of Energy as soon as possible after you redeem the rebate in the system, but no later than March 1, 2012.
  4. Any rebate claims received that are postmarked after March 1, 2012 will be returned to the sender and no rebate will be issued for that claim.

An applicant who is currently in the “approved” status is encouraged to redeem your rebate in the system as soon as possible.  Once you are in the “payment pending” status, you should mail in your claim to us by March 1, 2012.

To facilitate the rapid processing of your claim, please include the following documents and information in the paperwork you mail to us:

  1.  Bar coded summary page you print during the rebate redemption process
  2. Applicant Signature Page
  3. Invoice including model number and date of purchase of your new appliance or system
  4. AHRI certificate or Energy Star proof of purchase, depending on the item purchased

If ANY document is missing from your claim, it will slow down the rebate approval process and your rebate could be cancelled or rejected.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with these restrictions as we transition to the rebate program’s closure stage.   Thank you for your participation in the Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.

Updated November 8, 2011

This Appliance Rebate Program has unique eligibility and product guidelines and is independent of any other rebate programs offered through DMME.

New Information IconOn or about November 12, 2011, nearly 18 months after the program was launched on May 28, 2010, it is expected that  all appliance rebate funds will have been reserved. Requests for reservations then will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which they are received. For information about what it means if your reservation is placed on the waiting list, click here.

This rebate program is expected to be closed to new reservations very soon.  The time allowed to redeem an approved rebate reservation will be 30 days, effective on November 11, 2011.  Reservations approved prior to that date will continue to have a 60-day performance period.  The reduction in performance time to 30 days is necessary to ensure that all funds allocated to Virginia under this federal program are used by citizens of the Commonwealth.

Login below to redeem and print out a 2-page redemption form.  Sign and mail that form, along with all required documentation, to the DMME office in order to receive your rebate.  Please allow 8-12 weeks for processing.

Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program

Welcome to the Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.  Replacing old, inefficient appliances is a simple way to make a difference in both your energy bill and the environment.  As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) provided nearly $300 million for states to set up appliance rebate programs.  Virginia’s allocation is $7.45 million.

Virginia’s Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program offers Virginians up to $500 on certain ENERGY STAR qualified appliances.  The eligible appliances were selected to best accomplish the rebate program’s goals of increasing residential energy conservation through more efficient appliances and stimulating the Commonwealth’s economy and job growth through additional retail sales of ENERGY STAR products.

Rebates will NOT be available for products purchased prior to April 28, 2010. Rebates will NOT be available for Heat Pump Water Heaters purchased prior to May 28, 2010. Rebates will NOT be available for Dishwashers or Room Air Conditioners purchased prior to September 1, 2010.Rebates will NOT be available for Central Air Conditioners purchased prior to March 1, 2011. NEW – Households may now apply for more than one rebate.

Waiting List -- What does that mean?
Rebate reservation requests that are received after all available funds have been reserved are entered into a waiting list or queue in the order that they were received. Those wait-listed reservations may be approved in that order as rebate funding becomes available.  Even though all available funds have been reserved, applicants with approved reservations sometimes redeem a lower amount of funds than their reservation allows, or redeem no rebate amount at all. Some approved reservations are subsequently rejected because items do not meet program requirements, or applicants are unable to supply proper documentation.  Each of these events makes additional funds available and allows us to approve reservation requests on the wait list.

DMME cannot speculate on when or whether a wait listed reservation request might be approved  or disclose to a wait listed applicant their ranking on the wait list. DMME will allow the wait list to grow to a size that should be large enough to ensure that there are enough applicants in line to allow DMME to reallocate funds that are not used by approved applicants (based on the percent of such “breakage” learned from 18 months of experience). DMME will close the program to new applications when the wait list is large enough to ensure that Virginia citizens can use all of the available funds.  When all funds are awarded, if there are applicants still on the wait list, DMME will notify them by email that the program is closed and no funds are available.

THESE RECOVERY ACT REBATES SUPPLEMENT SOME EXISTING UTILITY REBATES.  By including Recovery Act money in the existing rebate programs, our utility partners can offer rebates to more Virginians.  Some local gas and water utilities have partnered with DMME to help Virginians easily make energy efficient choices when replacing old appliances.  DMME is providing these partner utilities with funds to extend their existing rebate programs.  Columbia Gas and Virginia Natural Gas customers who are interested in a rebate for a gas furnace or a gas water heater should contact their utility.  James City Service Authority customers who want a rebate for a clothes washer should contact JCSA for more details.
