Local Government and School Facility Renewable Energy Utilization Program
The Local Government and School Facility Renewable Energy Utilization Program will help local governments, public schools (K-12) and Virginia Community Colleges utilize solar and wind energy at their facilities. This initiative is intended to create jobs in the renewable energy field, increase exposure and knowledge about solar and wind power technologies among Virginia citizens and to provide opportunities for skills training for citizens interested in pursuing careers in the renewable energy field.
Funding for this program is made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). $5 million will be available on a competitive basis to localities, including public schools (K-12) and Virginia community colleges to install solar thermal systems that heat water or air, photovoltaic equipment (solar electric) and wind power systems.
Proposals will be ranked on a number of criteria such as leveraging of non-federal funds, geographic diversity, potential for job creation and local unemployment rates. Projects with a strong educational component are especially encouraged.
The application process is currently closed, but you may click here to view the application and guidelines. All correspondence regarding this program, and requests to be notified about programmatic updates should be sent to: FAQrenew@dmme.virginia.gov .
