2010 Virginia Energy Plan

The Virginia General Assembly established state energy policy and directed the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy to update the Virginia Energy Plan by July 1, 2010.  This legislation is found in Chapters 1 and 2 of Title 67 (§§ 67-100 through 67-203) of the Code of Virginia. 

The 2010 Virginia Energy Plan assesses the state’s energy picture through an examination of the state’s primary energy sources: electricity, coal, nuclear, natural gas, renewables, and petroleum.  The plan recommends actions to meet three goals:

1. Make Virginia the energy capital of the East Coast.
   • Grow both traditional and alternative energy production, jobs and investment.
   • Increase the use of conservation and efficiency.
2. Expand public education about Virginia’s energy production and consumption, its effect on our economy, and how Virginians can use energy more efficiently.
3. Maximize the investment in clean energy research and development through the work of the Universities Clean Energy Development and Economic Stimulus Foundation.

Virginia’s energy environment is complex and dynamic.  This will require that this plan be revised periodically over the next four years in order to stay on target meeting Governor McDonnell’s goal to make Virginia the Energy Capital of the East Coast.  We are looking forward to hearing input as we complete these updates.  Please send comments here.
